Abstract
12,530. Denison, A. R., and Curry, J. June 2.] Refuse-consuming furnaces.-The furnace comprises a chamber or retort A, built below the level of the ground and provided with a central bridge or partition B, which has on each side two sets of firebars C, E disposed one above the other. For starting the furnace, two fireplaces F, using coal, are arranged at one end of the chamber A on a level with firebars E. When the furnace is in operation, the garbage, which is fed into the chamber A through openings in the top, is first dried on the fire bars C and then pushed down through these bars, by means of a slice inserted through the side doors D, on to the bars E, where it is consumed, the products of combustion being utilized to dry the material on the bars C. These products afterwards escape through an opening G, and are led to the chimney I by a flue H, fitted with a damper operated by a rod h<1>. An opening, fitted with a loose cover h, is provided on the top of the flue H for cleaning purposes. In order to withstand the intense heat, the chamber A and flue H are lined with the firebrick and the bars C are arched and made of firebrick. The chimney I is also provided with a firebrick lining I', leaving a narrow air space i for the circulation of cold air, which enters through an opening i<1> at the bottom and leaves through another opening i<2> at the top. If desired, two or more retorts may be used in connection with one chimney.
