Abstract

10,251. Wokes, C., and Street, F. H. May 6. Ozone.-Consists of apparatus for producing ozone by electrically treating oxygen, and for purifying atmospheric air, mixed with oxygen or not, by the generation of ozone, such apparatus being applicable for use in connection with hospitals, theatres, hotels, dwellinghouses, and other places. An outer casing A, Fig. 4, is provided with inwardly-projecting rings, discs, ovals, or the like B, while an inner insulated casing G carries external projections H intermediate to the projections B and internal projections I, opposite the spaces between which rings &c. C, mounted on an insulated hollow or solid shaft D, are interposed. The air or oxygen in passing through the apparatus is ozonized by the silent discharge occurring between the electrodes B, H, I, C, the outer casing and spindle D being connected to the terminals of the source. Any number of concentric casings may be employed, and a modification is described, in which one casing A and a spindle D are used for supporting the electrodes. These latter may be in the form of a helical projection, or of longitudinal strips or of other forms, instead of transverse to the barrel axis as above. The electrodes, of any suitable metal, alloy, or good electric conductor, may also be so arranged that the edges or outer peripheries of the rings &c. B are opposite the edges of the rings &c. C and so on, instead of being opposite the spaces between them as above. The casings may be mounted on a loose suppport L, with a bell mouth, but may be directly connected with pipes for conveying and delivering the air &c. before and after treatment, respectively.
