Abstract

9005. Kitchen, J. M. W. April 21. Draught, regulating; air supply. -Air is admitted into the upper part of a stove or furnace, near or at the point where the products of combustion leave it by an arrangement which, if the combustion is too rapid, becomes an overflow for the gases. The arrangement may consist of a portion of the smoke flue B and an inlet, Fig. 10. Or a separate passage in the'smoke flue B may be formed by a partition d<5>, leading from the inlet D<1>, Fig. 8, which may or may not be provided with a conduit. Other means, Fig. 6, consists of a vertical tube d open at d<3> with a portion D<5> which enters the upper part of the stove or furnace. In a modification, the smoke flue is provided with a partition d<5>, Fig. 3, which divides the flue B into two separate passages, the lower one of which is in communication with a conduit d. Fig. 5 shows the smoke flue B fitted with the dividing-partition d<5> and arranged horizontally. In Fig. 4, the conduit d is shown having at its upper end an extension D<7>. The air supply is controlled either by dampers b or by varying the cross-sectional area of the air passage. The dampers also may direct the air into the stove or furnace and the products of combustion away from the incoming air ; or they may divert excessive gaseous products into the conduit d. A wall d<4> prevents down-draught. A second conduit D', provided with a damper D<3>, Fig. 1, regulates the draught in the chimney. The dampers, which may be controlled either automatically by the safety-valve of a steam generator, or by hand, have indicators affixed to the handles to show on the dial b<3> the extent to which the damper is open. In some cases, a T-shaped device, having a fusiform casing and separate passages, takes the place of the arrangement of parts and dampers described. The dampers used with this device have curved blades; they may have single counterbalanced blades G or double blades d<1>, Fig. 12. With this arrangement, the distributer D usually carries a tube atranged and perforated, as shown at N.
