8346. Higginbottom, E. April 11. Specific-gravity estimating-apparatus.-Relates to means for recording variations in the specific gravity of grain, cercals, granular substances, liquids, &c. The material is fed continuously through a hopper c, provided with a bye-pass m for any excess, into a measure a suspended by means of a balance beam, and issues through a pipe d made smaller than the inlet, whereby the measure is always kept full. The beam, bevelled by an adjustable spring k and provided with a stop n, is fitted with an arm f having a pen or pencil g at its lower end which presses upon a revolving cylinder h. The latter preferably is rotated by clockwork once in 24 hours, and by the aid of divisions h<1> and a fixed pointer, may be used as a clock. The drum thus shows the time during which the material is passing through the apparatus. A pointer on the beam, also gives readings over a graduated scale l. In a modification, a curved rack is mounted on the beam, or lever carrying the measure and gears with a pinion, on which a pointer moving over a scale is fixed, the measure being balanced by weights or springs at the opposite end of the lever. According to the Provisional Specification, the end of the weighing-lever not carrying the measure, has attached thereto a connecting-rod engaging with a second pivoted lever, which carries a pencil marking the rotating drum.
