Abstract
7529. Osgood, I., and Poyen, J. St. S. April 1. Lathes; chucks.-A lathe is arranged to cut continuous spiral grooves inside or outside axle bearings, axles, or other articles. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show the arrangement for cutting one or more oil grooves in an axle bearing. The lathe spindle is fitted with a chuck 6 and a tightening- spindle 7 for holding the bearing A. The chuck has a front socket 61 for the one end of the bearing, which is forced against it by a block 65 on the tightening-spindle, the chuck having open sides to allow the wcrk to be inserted and removed. Means, such as a screw 66, Fig. 4, in the chuck, are provided to ensure the rotation of the work with the chuck. The cutting-tool 8 is carried by a bar 9 secured on the slide-rest 92, which is reciprocated by a crank 11 of adjustable throw and a connecting-rod of adjustable length. The crank spindle is rotated by change gearing 14 from a pinion 13 connected to the lathe spindle by a clutch controlled by a handle 18. The spacing of the grooves, when more than one is cut, may be effected by a temporary disengagement of the clutch, which may have teeth or projections corresponding in number to the grooves to be cut.
