Abstract

3585. Stockley, H. Feb. 13. Boring - bars; drills, cutters, and cutter - bars; milling-cutters; reamers; taps.-In a boring or like tool for operating on circular surfaces, such as bolt-holes, bearings &c., and for recessing, the cutter is held in the cutter-bar by a cam-ring engaging a pin on the bar and adapted to have longitudinal movement when rotated. In the form shown io Fig. 1, the cutter c, is passed through a rectangular slot in the bar, against one side of which it is forced by the ring d, which has one or more inclined slots e engaging pins on the bar. The intermediate collar f rises slotted at the ends to receive the cutter or may be dispensed with, and the slots e have extensions e<1> for withdrawal. The tool may be mounted in the slide-rest of a lathe for boring-out the boss of a wheel, and several tools may be mounted in the bar for roughing and finishing or for boring work having successively larger diameters as cone pulleys &c. The tool may be rotated in a vertical position over a work-bed, and two cutters disposed at right-angles may be mounted in the tool, separated by a distance block or ring. In Fig. 7, two cutters c are shown, separated by a block h. A reamering or milling tool or a tap c, Fig. 3, may be mounted on the bar between a key c<2> and locking-ring d, and two of these tools may be used on the same bar as a tool shown in Fig. 1, the latter for roughing and the former for finishing the interior surface of a number of pedestals or bearings. The tool bar may be made in lengths, and the apertures for receiving the cutters in some cases made at the end of the sections by milling slots y<1>, z<1>, Fig. 8, in the socketed and chambered ends, through which passes a pin g engaging the cam-slot in the locking- ring.
