The square spindle is formed in two longitudinal sections, each of which is a half square in section. One end of each part has a countersunk screwthreaded hole, which receives a headed screw capable of being turned by a slot in its outer end. Each half-spindle is placed in its knob, and the screw is drawn outwards until the spindle is held tight. The half-spindles are inserted from opposite sides until they engage in the knobs, as shown in Fig. 7, when the screws are screwed inwards to produce a pressure between the half-spindles.
