Abstract

4465. Otto, E. C. F. Feb. 25. Brakes; driving-mechanism. - In a free-wheel and back-pedalling brake mechanism for cycles &c., an internally-threaded sleeve t is adapted to move longitudinally on a screwed sleeve n attached to the. chain-wheel, so that, at one end of its traverse, teeth x engage with a corresponding set on the hub, and, at the other end, teeth w engage the male brake element d, which, sliding on the squared portion c of the stationary spindle, comes in contact with the hub and applies the brake. For lubrication, spiral grooves f, Fig. 4, or rows of holes h are provided on one or both of the contact surfaces of the brake, so that the oil is worked to the smaller end of the cones, whence it returns through passages i. The part d is normally held in non-operative position by a spring e. The distance that the nut may move is so adjusted that, before entirely disengaging one of its sets of teeth, the other set is entered ; but, in some cases, the nut may pass clear of one set before engaging with the other, when a spring or friction device 3 is necessary, or a helical spring may be used. In forward-driving, the teeth x are maintained in engagement with the hub. On free-wheeling, the teeth attached to the hub run on and throw the nut t out of gear by moving it along the sleeve n towards the smaller end of the hub. In backpedalling, the sleeve forces the nut into engagement with the part d and applies the brake.
