Abstract

4032. Friedrich, A. Feb. 20. Gas valves; actuating valves; liquid-seal valves.- Relates to an arrangement for automatically lighting gas lamps furnished with a bye-pass jet as the pressure in the gas mains is increased, and extinguishing them as it is diminished. Above a nipple b screwing on to the gas pipe works a bell c, which is furnished with a slide socket d closed at its upper end and provided with lateral openings g. The gas reaches the interior of the bell through lateral openings e in the nipple, which also has a small passage f leading to the interior of the bell. The slide socket passes into the body h of the mixing-tube p. An annular groove i inside the body is surmounted by a chamber k from which an opening l lead to the burner. An opening leads from the groove i by a passage m to the by e-pass jet. The bell is loaded by disc weights o. The normal day pressure in the gas mains is not sufficient to raise the bell, which rests on the nipple and prevents the gas from entering the socket except through the small passage f. The lateral openings are then opposite the groove i so that gas supplies the bye-pass jet. When the pressure is increased in the evening, the bell is raised and gas passes to the burner and is lighted by the bye-pass jet, which is then extinguished as the openings g are no longer in connection with the groove i. When the pressure falls the bell drops, and the bye-pass is re-lighted from the main flame, the latter being then extinguished.
