Abstract

3896. Glover, L., Glover, C., and Crowther, D. Feb. 19. Water-tube boilers; stays and staying. - Relates to a water - tube boiler, in which the headers are formed by plates connected together by H or Z girders side by side, the flanges being riveted to the plates. The method of staying is applicable generally to opposing flat surfaces of other forms of boilers, such as, for instance, the fireboxes of locomotive boilers. Fig. 4 is a section on line A-A of Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 5 are corresponding sections of modifications. The girders uniting the plates of the headers are shown at f, f<1>. The holes for the tubes and plugs are made through the flanges of the girders, the two lowest rows of tubes being screwed into the flanges and acting as tie-bars. The plates of the headers are continued upwards, and connected to the steam drum i by means of angle-ironsj, and tied together close to this connection by means of short girders k, l. This connection serves to hold together the top and bottom parts of the steam drum, which may be in separate pieces, the openings to the headers being in this case longitudinal slots. The curved portions from k to f, and from l to f<1>, readily give to the expansion and contraction of the tubes without leakage. The lower ends of the header plates are connected together and the bottoms of the headers closed by H-girders n. The vertical girders do not reach to the bottom of the channel in the girders n, so that free communication exists between the compartments into which the headers are divided by the girders f, f<1>. Fig. 3 shows the construction when girders f and double Z-bars m are used, the bars m being riveted to the header plates. Fig. 5 is a case in which Z-bars f only are used.
