Abstract

337. Bremer, H. Jan. 6. Tyres, pneumatic etc.; felloes or rims; ice, adapted for running on.-A solid, cushion, or pneumatic tyre is protected by a chain g, Figs. 1 and 2, which is stretched tightly round the periphery, and is retained in its normalposition by lugs s, s<1> secured to metal plates l curved round the tyre. An additional lateral holder k, fixed to the rim f, may be employed, and the edges of the metal plates may be shaped to limit their inward radial movement by engaging against the rim. In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 5<a>, the chain is dispensed with, and the metal plates, which are connected together by bolts and nuts m, are retained in their normal position by being placed upon a rib R on the tyre. When the metal plates are a considerable distance apart, additional plates s, Fig. 7<b>, having slots b, may be secured so as to cover the intervening spaces. The metal plates may carry headed rods m, which pass through slotted bars fixed to the rim, to limit the radial movement of the plates. When it is intended to usethe tyre on the driving- wheel of a vehicle, the headed rods may be replaced by slotted arms pivoted to pins on the rim. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the radial movement of the metal plates and chain is limited by plates r fixed to the rim, which engage hooked arms q secured to the metal plates. The resiliency of the tyre may be obtained from springs p, Fig. 10, which are enclosed between metal plates and the rim f. In order to increase the grip of the tyre on the road, especially in frosty weather, the periphery may be formed with projections.
