Abstract

28,470. Mercier, P. Dec. 24. Tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders.- Nicotine is removed from tobacco smoke by bringing it into contact with oxidizing substances, or with suitable acids or metallic salts. Carbonic oxide is removed by means of oxidizing-agents, salts of gold, silver, &c. The substances may be dissolved and the smoke passed through the solution contained in any suitable receptacle in the pipe, cigar, or cigarette holder, narghile, &c., or granulated pumicestone, slag wool, asbestos, &c: impregnated with the re-agents may be employed. Some of the re-agents which may be used are permanganates, ammoniacal nitrate of silver, chloride of gold, sulphuric, boracic, phosphoric, and other acids, salts of iron, lead, zinc, magnesium, &c., peroxides, &c.
