Abstract

26,650. Vivian, M. Dec. 3. Tyres, pneumatic etc.; felloes or rims.-Slipping of' the wheels of motors car, bicycles, and other vehicles is prevented by constructing the tyres of india-rubber or like strips c of different degrees of hardness or vulcanization. In manufacturing the tyre, either the strips are placed together in a plastic state, and some of them afterwards hardened or vulcanized more than the others, or alternately hard and soft strips are cemented together. Carbon bisulphide, turpentine, or a fixed oil, applied to the harder portions, facilitates the union of the strips. In one process of vulcanizing, shellac or hard varnish is applied to the surfaces of the parts required to remain soft, which protects them from the fumes of the vulcanizing-agent. To apply the invention to existing tyres, a rubber band, of softer material than the tyre, is wound round the tyre and rim, as shown in Fig. 2, and is fastened by solution or otherwise. A similar tread band is sometimes attached to the ordinary outer cover by cement, or otherwise. The Provisional Specification states that the tyre may be attached to the rim so as to prevent creeping, by forming the rim either with eyelets or with depressions at intervals.
