Cornish &c. boilers; water chambers in flues.-In the flue is placed a water chamber with smoke tubes along its length, either forming a separate shell, as shown in Fig. 2, or baving the sides of the flue as its sides, as shown in Fig. 1. It opens freely into the body of the boiler, either by pipes, when it forms a separate shell, or by perforations in the wall of the flue. The arrangement shown in Fig. 1 consists essentially of two plates riveted to the flue at the sides and extending fully across the flue, forming a chamber a. Perforations are made for smoke-tubes e ; water fills the rest of the chamber, and circulates through the holes d into the body of the boiler. Fig. 2 shows a different arrangement ; the chamber is here separate and joins with the body of the boiler through pipes g ; the boiler may be fitted with rollers by which the chamber may be removed from the flue and which may act as distance plates ; or separate distance plates may be used.
