Abstract

24,202. Merington, C. Nov. 5. Friction gearing; belt gearing.-Relates to a method of transmitting power by friction gear, and increasing the grip of the belt in belt gearing. The driving-pulley A has an air tube C placed round a groove in its edge, this tube being inflated through a valve c, as shown in Fig. 2. The tube is covered with a leather strip D, which is forced against the inside of the driven pulley B. In order that belt driving-gear may be utilized, and to prevent excessive slip, the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is used. The pulley B drives the belt b<1>, which has contact with the pneumatictyred pulley A. On the shaft a carrying this pulley A is mounted a toothed wheel E on a freewheel mechanism e. This wheel E is of greater diameter than the pulley A, and gears with a wheel F fixed to the shaft carrying the pulley B. The action is as follows :-The pulley A is driven by the belt b<1>, and the wheel F gears with the wheel E but does not drive it unless slip occurs, since the velocity of the peripheries of B, A is greater than that of F, and the wheel E is of larger diameter than the pulley A. The pulley A will thus over-run the clutch e and no tooth action will take place between the wheels B, A. In the case of slip. however, the belt is driven by the combined friction of both pulleys.
