Sleepers ; rails, securing to sleepers; rail joints. -The sleepers are of trough-section, and the rails are held by the jaws 6, 8, with male and female shanks, as shown inverted in Figs. 4 and 5. These clamps are held together in the groove of the sleeper by oppositely-directed wedges 14, which pass through the sides of the sleeper and through the slots 5, 11, and 12 in the clamps. At the rail joints, the jaws 6, 8 may be replaced by fishplates.
