8006. Manger, H. K. J. April 5. Sleepers; chairs; rail joints.-The sleeper is substantially of #-form with flanged lower edges 10, and is cut away to leave shoulders 12, 13. Ribs 17 on the underside of the chair fit between the shoulders, and an end flange 22 on the chair covers the end of the sleeper. The chair is made with one fixed jaw 20, which, in a joint chair, has a rib 37 to take between the bevelled-off ends of the rail flange on that side. On the other side, two loose jaws 25, held by the shoulders 29 and a bolt, are used at joints. At intermediate chairs the two loose jaws are made in one piece, and the bearing for the rail is narrower but has projecting wings 33 in the centre of the sides. A non- metallic cushion 34 is placed under the rail, and is grooved or notched to fit.
