14,030. Jennings, A. G., and Davenport, J. J. June 20. Lap machines.-Hemp and other fibres are wound into a cylindrical roll in the form of a sliver in which the fibres are not twisted. The core F employed is shown in Fig. 5. It comprises two half-round pieces 51, 52, secured at the end in hollow collars 55. The core is supported between uprights 38, 39 on a sliding carriage D, and the sliver G is fed to it between rollers 34, 35, and a guide 62. The roll or bale, as it is formed, rests on rotating rollers 43, 44, and is pressed down by a roller 57 resting upon it. To remove the roll, the roller 57 is lifted into notches 61 on the top of the uprights 38, while the top of the uprights 39 are turned down about the pivots 40<a>, and serve as a rail on which the core F runs. The carriage D is caused to reciprocate as the roll is formed by the mechanism shown.
