Abstract

10,195. Swindell, W., [Johnston, A.]. May 3. Rolling; stamping.-Relates to the manufacture of hollow metal balls especially adapted for use in ball bearings. A metal blank D, Fig. 1, is forced by a punch C through an aperture B in a plate A so that the blank is formed into a cup, Fig. 2, with an irregular edge. This cup is shaped into a ball by placing it in a depression f, Fig. 3, in a plate F and compressing it with a punch G. The ball thus formed may be pressed, condensed, swaged, and reduced in size by direct pressure along various axes, but a number of balls are preferably treated for these purposes in the apparatus shown in vertical section in Fig. 7. The balls U are placed between a rotary disc R having a grooved periphery and a ring P which is grooved along the edge adjacent to the balls. The ring P is adjusted in position by screws 0 so that it is eccentric to the disc R, and, in passing through the narrowed space between the two, the balls are compressed &c., while in the wider parts the balls jostle and turn each other so that the next time they come to the narrowed space they are compressed along other axes.
