Abstract
240,608. Wolseley Motors, Ltd., and Boden, O. Aug. 25, 1924. Making bearings.-Race rings for ball or roller bearings are formed by punching out a disc h, Fig. 8, from sheet metal, forming the disc into a cup j, Fig. 10, punching at the bottom thereof, and submitting the article k, Fig. 12, so produced, to one or more operations in a press to cause the metal thereof to flow throughout the whole section to a different cross-sectional shape and thickness, the operations being performed in a die by a shouldered punch or by a plain punch fitted with a sleeve. For the inner race ring of a conical roller bearing the article k, Fig. 12, passes successively through the stages shown in Figs. 13 - - 15, the shoulder or sleeve of the punch pressing upon the edge n of the ring to cause the metal to flow to the desired shape. The additional flange t may be pressed by using the shouldered punch and a sectional die or it may be formed by rolling in known manner.
