Abstract
2231. Clarke, E. B. Jan. 28. Crucible cast steel.-In the process of making crucible steel, the usual quantities of iron or steel bars and scrap are introduced into the crucibles, in a heated or molten state. The crucibles are, preferably, heated before the introduction of the charges, and the usual additions of carbon, or other substances such as manganese, may be made. The preliminary heating or melting of the charges may be effected, on a large scale, by a continuous process analogous to the Talbot process of manufacturing open-hearth steel, but without the occurrence of the usual open-hearth reactions.
