Abstract

16,276. Kaufmann, W., and Bouvier, A. July 22. Silicon steel.-Relates to the use of silicon carbide in the manufacture of silicon steel, and has for its object to impart accurate proportions of silicon and avoid waste of the carbide by contact with slag. Steel or ingot iron is run at a high temperature from a furnace, and enters a ladle. When the metal covers the bottom of the ladle, crystalline or amorphous silicon carbide is added, each charge being enclosed in paper, woven fabric, or sheet metal and introduced near the stream of molten metal. The charges are added at intervals, and it is essential that the addition be complete before the slag begins to run into the ladle. The introduction of the silicon carbide may be effected in a chill or mould, the metal being run from a ladle.
