Abstract

454. Crease, J. F. Jan. 7. Incandescent gas &c. lamps. - Mantles are strengthened and rendered more durable by the use of wires, or asbestos threads. The strengthening may be effected in various ways, as by introducing fine wires or fine asbestos yarn, or a fine wire into the cotton yarn or the threads of cotton or other material from which the fabric is woven or manufactured. The wires may be protected, if necessary, from chemical action by coating with india-rubber or gutta-percha solution, or beeswax and tallow, or equivalent material. Or mantles made of threads of cotton or vegetable fibre may be strengthened at predetermined intervals by threads made up of cotton thread and wire or asbestos yarn. Or when cotton and like threads are steeped in the solution of the salts of the rare earths before manufacture, two or more such threads may be twisted or spun with wire or asbestos yarn into a single thread. When mantles are manufactured from cellulose filaments expressed through capillary tubes, wires or asbestos threads may be simultaneously expressed through the capillary tubes to form cores from the threads.
