Abstract
393. Sandberg, G. Jan. 6. Fats and fatty oils ; fatty acids; glycerine; soaps; candles; lubricants.-Relates to the production from train oil of an odourless product for use as a tallow substitute in the manufacture of hard soap, candles, and in other ways, and for use as a lubricant. The train oil is stirred with sulphuric acid at a suitable temperature, and nitrous salts are added. After stirring for some time, the fat is washed with water to remove sulphuric and nitrous acids. The sulpho-sebacic acids present may be decomposed by treatment with direct steam. The fat is finally purified by distillation or other means. By the treatment of train oil with sulphuric acid alone at a higher temperature, a similar product may be obtained. The " train oil tallow " produced consists mainly of free sebacic acids, solid and liquid. During the reaction the glycerides of the train oil are converted by the sulphuric acid into glycerine and free sebacic acids, and the oleic acid is converted into sulpho-oxy-stearic acid which is decomposed by steam into sulphuric and oxystearic acids. The nitrous acid changes the oleic acid into solid elaidic acid.
