26,166. Ellershausen, F., and Western, R. W. Dec. 21. Zinc hydrate and oxide.-Zinc ore, calcined, if necessary, is moistened with a solution of ammonium sulphate and then with sulphuric acid. The mass is lixiviated with an ammonium-sulphate solution to dissolve out the zinc and cadmium sulphates, a little calcium carbonate being added to decompose ferric sulphate, if present. Cadmium is precipitated by means of zinc dust, and ammonia is added to the solution to precipitate zinc hydroxide, which may be heated to produce a pigment or may be smelted for the metal. The ammonia for use in the process may be obtained by treating a portion of the ammonium-sulphate solution with lime, while the ammonium - sulphate solution obtained in the process is stored for re-use, thus minimizing the quantity of water to be employed.
