Tyres, pneumatic.-The part m i n of the air tube which lies within the rim is made stiffer than the other part, in order to protect it from damage by being nipped in the cover or rim. The stiffening may be produced either by gradually thickening the rubber, as shown in Fig. 2, or by embedding canvas or the like in the rubber, or by vulcanizing or superheating more highly the part to be stiffened, or by increasing the proportion of sulphur in it. The air tube is preferably made as large as or greater than the outer cover, so that, when inflated, the rubber of the air tube is under compression and is thus specially suitable for the use of self-sealing liquids.
