Abstract

17,157. Tuckfield, C., and Weston, D. Aug. 27. Annular-chamber type.-A rotary engine which can be used as a high-pressure or compound engine is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The drum b has two sets of grooves c, d, each having a curved projection or piston e. Sliding abutments fare pressed into the grooves by steam, and are similarly shaped to the grooves, which are wedgeshaped or curved in cross-section. The grooves are connected by passages in the casing to ports i, i<2> in the valve-chest k, which contains a slide valve l with duplicate sets of ports n, o. By means of an operating-handle t, high-pressure steam is admitted to the central grooves, from which it exhausts to the outside grooves, or by putting the valve in its extreme position, steam can be admitted direct to all the grooves, and then passes to the exhaust r.
