Superheaters, steam. -A number of depending close-ended tubes c, with internal circulation tubes, are fitted in a series of divided headers A so as to project into the flue space of a boiler. The headers and their connecting - pipes are freely suspended as shown in Fig. 1, so that they may be raised or lowered to expose more or less of the tube surfaces to the heating-gases, a flexible connection to the main steam outlet of the boiler being provided. Fig. 8 shows a cross-section through one header and one pair of tubes. The outer tube c fits in a conical seating in the header, being pressed down by a perforated cylinder or lantern h, which again is depressed by a screw p. The lantern fits an opening in the partition of the header, and carries the inner tube b. The joint between the lantern and the top of the header is made by a cap m pressed down by a plate n and screws t, and the tube c may be similarly jointed in the header. The tube c, lantern h, and cap m are all screwed for the reception of a tool by which they are inserted and removed. Fig. 11 shows a modified form of joint at the top of the lantern, consisting of an angular copper ring w engaging recesses in the meeting faces ; a cap w<2> over the screw p is similarly jointed. The various headers are connected together near their ends by means of face joints with rings of jointing-material, being held together by bolts passing through the connecting-openings; or they may be connected together by expanded nipples.
