Abstract
10,352. Hammond, J. B. May 18. Bottles etc.; stoppers; drinking-vessels.-Relates to closures for bottles, glasses, or other receptacles for containing or dispensing wines, medicines, waters, or other liquids or dry substances. The closure consists of a cap or cover 2 of glass, vulcanite, &c., provided on its lower flanged edge 3 with a conical elastic ring 7, having beaded edges 8, 9, the edge 8 being stretched over the flange 3, as shown. When the cover is placed on the vessel, the bead 9 of the ring 7 rubs over the outer surface of the neck &c., wiping it clear of any dust, germs, &c., and, when in position, serving to exclude such deleterious matters. In removing the cover, the bead 9 turns partially, and performs a similar wiping action. The cover is secured to the cork or stopper 5 of the bottle &c. by means of a screw 4, or by a barbed spike, corkscrew, bolt, or the like, the head 11 of which may be embedded, as shown in Figs. 1 and 9, in the material of the cover. When the cover is made of glass or metal, it is formed with a hole through which the screw &c. is inserted When used for a glass, Fig. 2, the cover is employed without a cork or stopper. For bottles containing effervescent liquids, the cover is prevented from being blown off by the means shown in Fig. 9, which consist of flat metal clips 16 pivoted on a ring 14 encircling the cover. The arms 12 of the clips bear against the cover, and the other ends of the clips are adapted to catch under the shoulder of the neck. The clips are released by pressing their arms 13 inwards.
