Abstract

9440. Wiley, A.R. May 7. Instruments with sonorous blocks.-Relates to that class of instrument in which sonorous wood or metal bars or blocks are struck with a hammer. Instead of arranging the blocks in the ordinary way, according to the scale, they are arranged in groups corresponding to chords, so that, by drawing the hammer along any one of the groups, an arpeggio effect is produced. Fig. 2 shows part of one such group in which bare the blocks resting on soft cords as usual and kept in place by pins d. Strips e of some soft non- sonorous material are placed between the blocks, and at the ends of each group, the top of each strip being a little above the adjacent blocks. These have the effect of raising the hammer and causing it to drop on the succeeding block as it is drawn along, thus rendering the sound produced more distinct.
