Abstract

15,574. Haddan, R., [Bauer & Hawraneck]. July 12. Pianofortes and like instruments have groups of wires or strings, forming chords, placed between the ordinary chromatically-tuned strings, and, by shifting the keyboard, such groups of strings are struck by some of the hammers instead of the ordinary ones. Two keys are operated by tho left hand, one for the bass note and the other for a chord, the connection between the keys being suitably indicated. The grand pianoforte partly shown in plan in Fig. 1 has groups of extra wires 14 between the ordinary wires 13 next above the bass wires. The frame 15, Fig. 2, carrying the keyboard and hammers, has pins 22 taking into slots 23 in the slide bars 24, by means of which the frame can be moved longitudinally, so as to bring the hammers 20, Fig. 5, which have faces of half the width of the ordinary hammers 19, under the chord wires 14 instead of under the wires 13. The wires 14 may be placed somewhat above the ordinary wires 13.
