Abstract

5757. Hayes, A. March 19. Gas and vapour burners, atmospheric. -Fig. 11 shows a combined or convertible gas and vapour burner. The burner may also be used for carburetting gas of inferior quality, or the gas supply fittings may be dispensed with, a starting cup being then provided for commencing the vaporization of the oil. The burner shown in Fig. 11 is started by admitting gas through the fitting 30 to the chamber 31, whence it passes to the mixing- tube 21, to which air is admitted through the inlets 16, 23. The greater portion of the mixture passes through the perforated metal disc 25 to the burner head to supply the main flame, while the remainder is deflected downwards by the disc 25 through the tubes or annulus 24, at the lower end of which it is ignited. The ring of flame thus obtained is forced by the draught in the form of a hollow cone into the lower end of the mixing-tube 21, and the flame not only heats both the gas and air supplies but also vaporizes the oil issuing under pressure from the nozzle 3. The needle valves 4, 6, respectively contro ling the outlet and the inlet orifices to the oil chamber 17, are preferably opeiated simultaneously by means of a common spindle 10. Thus, by cutting off or controlling the gas or oil supplies, the burner may be supplied with gas only, or with vapour only, or with both gas and vapour, and the oil nozzle is not liable to be choked by tarry deposits, since the vaporization of the oil is effected within the annular flame of the secondary burner, and not in the oil fitting itself.
