4427. Apjohn, J. H. March 1. Weigh-bridges for railway vehicles. -A hydrostatic weighbridge for railway vehicles, adaptable for lighter rolling loads, is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The platform a rests on flexible cushions b containing water and connected to a pressure gauge by pipes c. The platform has rails e for the wagon, and connecting-rails m rest on the platform and abutments and serve to steady the bridge when a wagon is moving on to it. The cushions consist of a chamber s, Fig. 3, fitted with a metallic basket h, which secures a rubber diaphragm i, and is secured by a ring j. Each basket carries a disc g, which supports one corner of the platform, and the baskets are connected by pipes c to an ordinary gauge, on to a gauge indicating the weights and consisting of a fluid-actuated diaphragm acting on a system of levers and rack and pinion or other suitable device. To counteract the horizontal thrust on the bridge caused by an oncoming wagon, each end of the bridge may be fitted with a bar B, Fig. 4, which has knife-edges on its ends bearing against a stud E on the platform and against an adjustable plate in a standard C. A device for relieving the bridge from the excessive load of a locomotive is shown in Fig. 5. A bar H is connected at its ends to tripping-devices L, actuated only by the heavy weight of a locomotive, which gives the bar a horizontal motion. This causes the trolleys N to be pushed up the inclines G and raise the platform, and vice versÔ.
