Abstract
3761. Marshall, J. T. Feb. 21. Valve gear.-Relates to linkage valve gear designed to ensure that the valve shall open quickly to the full extent, then dwell or remain stationary for a time, and then suddenly close, so as to avoid wire-drawing, and shall also, when linked up, not reduce the exhaust area so as to cause back-pressure. Fig. 2 shows a form of the gear as applied to a locomotive. The valve is actuated, through an adjustable rod 14, by a slot link 11, which oscillates on a pivot 10. This pivot is carried by a slide reciprocated in guides 6 by an eccentric 2 on the crank shaft with a throw equal to the lap and lead of the valve. The link is rocked on its pivot by an arm 26 connected by a rod 23 to a rocking lever 20 actuated by an eccentric 3 placed with its centre about 90‹ in advance of the eccentric 2. The opening and closing of the valve are produced by the added movements due to the two eccentrics, while the dwell is produced by their differential effect. The application of the invention to a variableexpansion non-reversing stationary engine is shown in the Specification, and also the application to an engine without variable expansion. In the latter case, a simple bent lever is substituted for the slot link 11 and its arm 26. The gear may be used for Corliss as well as slide valves.
