Abstract
3737. Gardner, E., Gardner, T. H., and Gardner, L. Feb. 21. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. The heat of the valve box and igniting-tube is utilized to vaporize the oil or spirit. For small engines, a chamber such as B is made above the valve-chest A, through which the oil and air pass. The igniting-tube C is placed above the vaporizer, and the heat of the flame is deflected partly upwards and partly downwards by a shifting plate P. The oil is fed across the air pipe, and the oil pipe F, Fig. 4, may be readily removed to take samples of the oil charges; the air pipe G is controlled by a valve I. In large engines, the igniting- tube is placed below and the vaporizing-chamber B around the valve-chest.
