Abstract

3059. Salvesen, N. Feb. 12. Rudders; jury gear.-In the event of a vessel's rudder being carried away, a rope is paid down through the rudder trunk, its end brought on deck, and bent into the form shown in Fig. 3. The bights are secured by cords or small ropes g, and enclosed in a bent metal or other plate a, a<1>, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. To the plate is secured an attachment e, over which a loop h of chain is passed. A rudder is thus formed, and is secured by passing the loop h over the heel of the stern frame, and making it fast by chains j, l. The end n of the rope is then hauled taut and made fast. Ropes m, attached to eye-bolts, are used to operate the rudder. In the case of a sailing ship, the chains j are not required.
