Abstract

2667. Naef, P. Feb. 7. Cooling compressors.-Relates to the cooling and lubrication of the working surfaces of engines, such as fluid-pressure motors or gas compressors, rotary or other types. The cooling - agent is introduced through a hollow piston-rod and circulated in the piston through channels in proximity to the cylinder walls, and is then discharged again through the piston-rod. The lubricant is introduced in like manner, but either the whole or a portion is delivered through suitable orifices at the periphery of the piston. Both these provisions may be applied jointly to the same piston, or the lubricant and the cooling-agent may be mixed. The lubricant discharged between the piston and cylinder walls also assists in preventing leakage past the piston. Numerous examples are given in the Specification, showing various ways in which the circulating-channels may be formed in the piston and the hollow piston-rods connected with the supply and discharge pipes ; also the way in which the circulation may be forced. Thus Fig. 4 shows a piston with cooling-ducts d<1>, d' and perforated lubricating-ducts d<2> in the form of coiled pipes, connected with the fixed supply and discharge pipes by telescopic pipes d<7>, d<8>, d<15>. Fig. 8 shows a piston with the ducts formed by making grooves in the piston body h<1> and the shrinking on a ring h<3>. Fig. 5 shows the channel a' formed in the packing-ring, and the telescopic supply pipe provided with a valve at e<9> whereby it is converted into a plunger pump for forcing the circulation. In other examples, the circulating- channels are formed by a coiled tube embedded in the piston body or in a ring attached thereto ; and the hollow piston-rods are connected with the fixed supply and discharge pipes by various arrangements of. jointed and telescopic pipes.
