Abstract

1777. Schmidt, O. Jan. 25. Foul waters, treating; settling and decanting; s c u m, removing.- Relates to apparatus s especially adapted for purifying paper-mill effluent. The effluent enters, by a pipe b, into a tall settling - tank a, where the scum, oil, &c., lighter than water, rise to the surface and flow into an opentopped vessel c with discharge pipe d. The heavier particles, such as sand, metal, &c., sink to the bottom of the tank a, while the water, carrying with it pulp and other valuable waste, passes to one or more settling-tanks i by a large pipe h having a wide mouth situated a little above the conical bottom of the tank a. The pulp &c. settles in the tanks i, and is utilized again. Water from the tanks i may be used to wash the vessel c.
