Abstract
517. Candy, F. Jan. 8. Sewage and foul waters, treating; bacteriological processes; tanks.-The sludge deposited by the effluents from bacterial filters or beds, or the organisms resulting from cultivation of those in the sludge, may be added to sewage, before being treated in bacterial filters or beds. The effluents may be passed through a tank in which the sludge is allowed to deposit prior to removal for use, or the sludge may be collected and stored in the bottoms of the filters or beds, before being employed. A tank which may be used in connection with the process is shown in Fig. 3. This tank is fitted with a discharge valve d<2>, the action of which is controlled by means of a tilting-vessel g, mounted adjustably upon a link h<1>, supported by an oscillatory lever e connected to the valve. When the liquid rises to the upper end of a discharge pipe i, fitted to the tank, it flows along the pipe and fills the vessel g, which then descends and lifts the valve d<2>. After the tank has been emptied, the vessel is tilted by means of a counterweighted lever l, which presses upon the discharge end of the vessel, and is actuated by means of a lever k and float j. Sewage &c. may be distributed over filters and bacterial beds by means of perforated pipes t, Fig. 4, secured to a rotating head o, mounted upon ball bearings r, above the top of a supply pipe m. The head is guided by rollers o', which may be radially adjustable. A cover s is fitted over the upper end of the pipe m, and gases may be withdrawn from beneath it by means of a pipe v.
