Abstract

Settings; flues, external. - A device for sealing the joint between the brickwork and end plates of Lancashire type boilers comprises a movable flat plate arranged so that its edge rests against the boiler and its flat surface lies against a slightly inclined surface on or fixed to the brickwork. In a modification, the device is in two parts. An inclined surface 6 is attached to the brickwork 4 and against it rests the sealing plate 9, the front end of which contacts with the end 5 of the boiler. An inclined surface 10 on the rear edge of the plate 9 rests on a roller 11 whereby the plate is kept in engagement with the boiler. The edge of the plate is preferably surfaced at 12 with copper. For dish-ended boilers the edge 12 is rounded, may be bent up into the vertical, and may be flanged. Alternatively, a second contacting loose plate may be used which bears against rollers on the first plate. Both plates move to and fro, but only the second contacting plate has a slight vertical movement. The two plates may be connected by pin and slot devices or by inclined pivoted arms.
