15,762. Bateman, L. H. Sept. 5. Screwing; tapping.-A disengaging tap or dieholder, for use in capstan or other lathes and tapping or drilling machines with a reversible spindle, has a shank 1 on which is an arm 2 with a notched stop 3. A sleeve 5, capable of rotation on the shank, carries the die or tap, and is held against rotation during operation by a lug 6 on it engaging the stop 3. Just before the desired length of thread is cut, the motion of the slide &c. carrying the shank is arrested by an adjustable stop, causing the sleeve to be drawn forward till the lug 6 is opposite the notch 9 as shown. The sleeve is then free to rotate, and the cutting ceases. The work spindle is then reversed, and the slide drawn back slightly, causing the lug 6 to again engage the stop 3 and screw the tap or die out of the work. A lug 4 limits the travel of the sleeve on the shank.
