Abstract

13,847. Marburg, F.. Aug. 2. Starting, facilitating.-Relates to turbines and to any force pumps where it is necessary for the motor to get up speed before the load is thrown on, and consists in admitting liquid, under pressure or head, to the induction side, for the purpose of wholly or partially counterbalancing the normal excess of back pressure at the eduction side. The invention is shown as applied to the axial-flow turbine described in Specification No. 7116, A.D. 1900, [Abridgment Class Rotary engines &c.]. A closed pressure tank 8 is connected by a pipe 9 with the eduction outlet 7 of the turbines 5, and by a pipe 10 with the annular chamber 3 of the induction inlet 2. A bell valve 13 in the pipe 10 is normally open, the upper part of the valve casing being connected by a pipe 17 to the annular chamber 3. This construction causes the pressure above the turbines to be balanced by the pressure behind them. When the turbines are started, as soon as the current is established through the pump, the pressure in the chamber 3 is reduced, and, owing to the contracted character of the ports 15 in the valve 13, the valve is pressed upwards and closes the passage of liquid in the pipe 10. In modifications (1) the automatic valve 13 is replaced by a hand-operated valve ; (2) the pressure tank 8 is dispensed with and the pipe 10 is supplied from any source under pressure ; (3) a relief valve is provided on the eduction side of the pump, as described in the above mentioned Specification, but with the pipe from the top of the valve casing leading to a waste outlet pipe instead of to the induction side of the pump ; and (4) in those cases where the pump is used for supplying a tank under pressure, the pipe 10 is connected directly to such pressure tank.
