Abstract

9142. Strong, H. A. May 17. Oxygen; nitrogen.-Relates to a method of cooling air or other gases for the production of a refrigerating effect or for their liquefaction; the method is also useful in the separation of oxygen and nitrogen. Air &c. compressed in the compressor G is cooled in a cooler L and intercooler or heat-exchanger H, and then led under the bell mouth of the pipe A, in which it rises, carrying with it liquid from the reservoir E. Here it expands and does work, being further cooled and in part liquefied under certain conditions. The cooled air returns by the pipe D and inter-cooler H to the compressor, or is otherwise utilized for refrigerating purposes. The liquid returns by the pipe C through the turbine or other motor F to the reservoir E. The work derived. from the falling liquid by this motor may be transferred to the compressor G. The liquid in the reservoir may be brine or the like if a simple cooling effect is desired, or it may be liquid air when liquefaction is to be performed. In the latter case, owing to the difference of the boiling-points, the liquid becomes enriched in nitrogen, and the escaping gas in oxygen, and these may be tapped off. The various pipes &c. are insulated.
