Abstract

Liquefying.-Gas is compressed, preferably ir stages, to a pressure sufficient to liquefy it at the desired temperature; a part of the gas is ex panded in a single stage.apparatus 4, Fig. 1, witt recovery of external work to obtain the necessary fall of temperature for the liquefaction of the other part, which passes through a heat exchanger 5 wherein the liquefaction is effected. The expanded gas is returned to a suitable stage of the compressor. Fig. 2 shows apparatus in which the liquefied gas is transferred to a rectification column, in which it is separated. Air passes through a three-stage compressor B, C, D, a cooler E and an exchanger F cooled by the exhaust from the engine 4, which is returned to the second stage cylinder C. Part of this air is delivered through a pipe 2 to the expansion engine 4; the remainder passes through tubes in a liquefying exchanger 5, surrounded by the returnina exhaust from the engine. The liquefied air is delivered to a compartment J of the rectifier. The whole or part of the engine exhaust may be delivered to the same compartment, from which the liquid is delivered through a valved pipe K to the middle of the column, while the vapour rises into a coil M forming the boiler of the rectifying column, this vapour being liquefied and delivered to the top of the column. The nitrogen escaping at the head cools the second liquefier 5, and is returned through the exchanger F to the compressors. The ratio of expansion is made as small as practicable. The amount of air or gas supplied to the expansion engine is regulated to provide just the required lowering of temperature.
