Abstract
6515. Schmidt, F. March 18. Separating gaseous mixtures by liquefaction and solidification.-I m p u r i - ties, such as carbonic acid, are separated from air and other gases by liquefying the gas, thus causing the impurity to be solidified and precipitated, and by then allowing the upper part of the liquid to evaporate. The apparatus comprises a liquefying and settling chamber i, into which the compressed gas is led by a pipe a. The solidified carbonic acid is blown off through a valve c, while the purified liquid passes away through an expansion valve e and is allowed to bathe or spray the chamber i in order to effect the requisite cooling. The compressed gas may be cooled by coiling the pipe a around the chambers i as shown. The various fractions of gas obtained by the evaporation of the liquid are led away through passages f, h, g. The carbonic acid thus separated may be used in a heat-exchanger for a preliminary separation of the water vapour from the air.
