Abstract
5365. Hinks & Son, J., and Hinks, H. D. March 21. Extinguishing oil lamps.-For lamps burning light or volatile oils, a flat flame extinguisher comprises, in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a sleeve c sliding on each wick-tube a and carrying a specially-shaped pivoted flap b. When the sleeve c is raised on the wick-tube, either by the lamp being tilted or upset or by a hand-lever, an approximately - horizontal extension b<2> of the flap b engages with a projection a<2> on the wicktube a and causes the flap b to close over and extinguish the flame. In duplex lamps, the extensions b<2> may be arranged either at the adjacent, or at the opposite, ends of the respective wick-tubes. Figs. 7, 9, 10, and 11 show a modified construction, in which the ends of the extensions b<2> are bent or hooked, to allow of their being interlocked, and the said extensions are operated by a curved projection d<2> on the actuating-lever, instead of by projections on the wicktubes.
