Abstract
838. Lake, H. H., [Shearman, T.]. Jan. 13. Gas burners, igniting ; gas supply, controlling.-A Bunsen burner 6 and electric igniting-apparatus 10 are used to effect preliminary heating of an incandescent body a in an electric lamp, the gas supply being cut off automatically when the body a has become hot enough to conduct electric current. Gas is sup plied through a socket 1, a tube 2, and a valve 9 to the burner 6, when the valve is lowered in opposition to a spring 20, either by a hand ring 16, or by an ironclad electromagnet d acting on an armature 17 carried by the valve. The electromagnet d is electrically connected in parallel with the body a by contacts h, when the lamp is not in action, and until sufficient current passes through the body a and electromagnet c to attract an armature lever g, carrying the lower contact h. Thus, when current is turned on, the gas valve 9 opens, and remains open until the body a is sufficiently conductive. The gas is ignited, when the valve 9 descends, by a spark produced between a fixed contact p and a wire 10 on the valve, the contact p being connected through a " high resistance coil " f and the contacts h with the supply wire e.
