Abstract

24,703. Cordner, R. A. Dec. 12. Driving-mechanism.-Relates to single or two speed driving-mechanism arranged to give a free wheel. Fig. 1 shows the gearing arranged to give two speeds. Chain-wheels p, q are mounted loosely on the hub, and are geared by chains to chainwheels of unequal size on the crank axle. Either chain-wheel can be locked to the hub by a sliding clutch r carrying pins s or their equivalents which engage holes s<1> in the chain-wheels. When the clutch is in a middle position, as shown, both chain-wheels run free. The clutch turns with the hub, and is connected by rods e to a collar f on which is mounted on ball bearings o a divided ring m, n. The part m forms a flange, and carries pins engaging inclined slots in the rim i of a casing j fixed to the axle. A rod fixed to the screw l is connected to a suitable lever, the movement of which turns the ring m, n and thus, through the movement of the pins in the slots, moves the clutch r to the right or left. When only one speed is required, the chain-wheel q is removed, and if the free-wheel mechanism is not required the rods e and the clutch-actuating mechanism are detached and the clutch r is held in engagement with the wheel p by a collar fixed on the end of the hub. When the gear is constructed to give one speed only, the casing j may be fixed on the same side as the chain-wheel, the collar f in this case forming the clutch and being fitted with pins &c. to engage recesses in the chain-wheel
