Abstract
1954. Ford, E. J. Jan. 28. Driving-mechanism.-In a driving-mechanism for velocipedes, the rear-wheel spindle a is mounted in bearings on the frame of the machine and is adapted to be rotated in one direction through the free-wheel mechanism d by reciprocating levers d<1>. The spindle a carries a chain-wheel f gearing by means of a chain f<1> with a chain-wheel f<2> on the bottom-bracket spindle. This spindle also carries a larger chain-wheel g<1> which gears by means of chain g<2> with a sprocket-wheel g<3> carried by the driving-wheel hub. This gearing-up mechanism produces a considerable rotation of the driving- wheel for each of the short strokes of the reciprocating levers.
