18,313. Crowden, C. T. Sept. 11. Compound and multiple-expansion engines.-Relates to a controlling-valve, by which the engine may be made to work either simple or compound. Fig. 1 shows a section at right-angles to the cylinders G, H. In the position of the controlling- valve B shown in the Figure, the exhaust from the high-pressure cylinder G passes to the valvechest of the low-pressure cylinder through the ports C, D. When shifted to the left, as shown in Fig. 2, the high-pressure port C is cut off from the low-pressure port D, but is opened to the passage F leading to the atmosphere or condenser, while the port D is opened to a live steam supply passage E. In a modification, the valve B is furnished with an additional piston to enable it to be actuated by steam pressure.
